New Thesmoforian Workshop

The environment, the effects of the climate crisis and the products of Attica’s land were put at the forefront of a “fruitful” workshop presented at the Palace of the Old Parliament!

 

The workshop “Attica Earth and its products: environment and climate crisis, perspectives” was held with great interest and significant participation on Tuesday 19 September 2023 in the framework of the Gaia Attica Festival 2023| New Institutions and under the scientific curatorship of Dr. Aikaterini Polymerou-Kamilaki, Director of the Centre for the Study of Hellenic Folklore of the Academy of Athens. A qualified scientific panel of ten speakers, consisting of academics, researchers, agronomists, farmers, etc., developed thoughts on the principles of sustainability and the prospects for the development of primary production in Attica.

The conference was opened by the President of the Greek National Tourism Organisation, Angela Gerekou, giving the impetus for an interesting connection between the idea of the implementation of the Festival of New Thesmoforia and the prospects of a sustainable future for Attica, while Dr Kamilaki, coordinator of the conference, attracted the interest of the audience with her presentation: “Productive Attica, Myth and modern reality”. In addition, the conference also heard in-depth opinions and positions, while proper methods for the development of local production and adaptation to the challenges of the new era were proposed. Christos Zerefos, Secretary General of the Academy of Athens, National Representative for Climate Change, highlighted the anthropogenic factors of climate change, while Stavros Vemmos, Emeritus Secretary General of the Academy of Athens, highlighted the anthropogenic factors of climate change. Professor of Horticulture at the Agricultural University of Athens, focused on the effects of climate change on olive cultivation in Attica.

  • Dimitris Michaelides, author of “AgroNews”, “AgroBus”
  • Magda Kontogianni, Breeder, Secretary of the Livestock Association of Attica Region
  • Georgios Boskou, Deputy Director of the Agricultural Department of the Greek Ministry of Agriculture, Agrarian Association of Greece. Professor of Harokopio University, Nutritionist
  • Georgios Pittas, researcher and author
  • Dr. Yolanda Totsiou, agronomist specializing in Food Technology etc.

After the successful completion of the workshop, Ms. Gerekou, appeared particularly pleased with the completion of the work and noted:

“Today’s scientific workshop “Attica Earth and its products: environment and climate crisis, perspectives” I am sure that it will be a valuable legacy to the common goal of all of us for a sustainable development in Attica. Scientific knowledge and modern development models are perhaps our strongest ally both for the protection of the land and its fruits, and for their promotion and utilization, so that they become a pillar for a sustainable model of tourism development, respecting the environment, culture and the quality of life of the inhabitants.

Dr. Aikaterini Polymerou – Kamilaki, for the overall scientific supervision and the excellent organization and coordination of the Workshop, all the participants – distinguished scientists, who honored us with their presence, Their statements today will serve as a guide for the future and of course the Regional Governor, George Patoulis, and the entire team from the Region and Metropolitan Attica for the exemplary implementation and unreserved support of every aspect and every action of the New Institutions. ”

 

The CEO of the Development Agency “New Metropolitan Attica” Mr. Iosif Parsalis said:

“With the 1st Gaia Attica New Institutions Festival this year we are laying the foundations and paving the way for an Institution which will not only have a celebratory character but will be a vehicle for the production of actions, policy proposals and strategic development programmes for the primary sector and its interconnection with tourism. Our ambition in the Development Agency of the Region is through the New Institutions, to create a partnership of the competent bodies, the academic and scientific community and the relevant associations, social groups, in order to submit proposals and action plans for the formulation of relevant development pre-programmes in the respective financial instruments for the current pre-programming period.

I believe that today’s Workshop can be the first step towards this goal and we all look forward to the presentations.”
